Asus shipped 700,000 EEE PCs in September

Eee_pc_3A Chinese newspaper has reported that Asus has shipped a whopping 700,000 EEE PCs in September.  The creator of the netbook category with its original EEE PC, Asus also reported shipping 1.7 million netbooks in the third quarter of this year.  These shipping numbers are good in their own right but they don’t take into consideration the projected holiday sales in Q4.  Asus expects fourth quarter numbers to rival these reported figures.  The Commercial Times newspaper also reports that profit margins for the EEE PC have been in the 15 – 20% range but expects price drops due to competition to drop margins to the 15% range.

That’s 15-20% gross margin. I believe most computer makers have a profit margin around 2-3%. By comparison the “low margin” Intel Atom carries a 45% gross margin.
