Windows 7 is Windows 7
Let’s take the focus off the big Apple event today and share some news about those other big guys, Microsoft. On the Microsoft Vista Team Blog Mike Nash has spilled the big beans that the next version of the Windows operating system, code named Windows 7, will officially be called…… drum roll please…. Windows 7. Now if that isn’t a shrewd marketing ploy. Call the OS Windows 7 for months and months. Then officially name it Windows 7.
Is it coincidence that the next version of the Windows Mobile platform is… Windows Mobile 7? How about the next version of Office? Let’s call it Office 7. Then let’s take the next version of Internet Explorer, code named IE8, and call it Internet Explorer 7. Again. We’ll rename DirectX10 to, you guessed it, DX7. What a marketing ploy this could be. When all the buzz dies down then Microsoft can step in and legally change the company name to, you ready for this? Microsoft 7. It can all be laid out in a billion-dollar ad campaign starring the newly legally name-changed Jerry Seven. You heard it here first, folks.
Wow, an uninspired name. Made worse since Apple is already up to 10+ – perceptions should not be discounted.
I can’t wait for the upcoming Xbox 7!
A couple years ago, Microsoft named their console Xbox 360 to compete against Sony’s PS3, leaving me wondering whatever happened to Xboxes #2-359.
I wouldn’t be surprised if we see a similar stroke of genius when Microsoft is pitted against Snow Leopard. Windows 720 or 1080, anyone? It won’t be long until they shift to Stardate notation.
Well they could call it IE7 R2 or IE7 SP1…
The next Office is going to be Office 14, but that’s TWICE the goodness of 7, so nya!
As for Windows Mobile 7… well, if the new interface for WM7 ends up being as good as they claim, then it might just end up having some similarity with Windows 7, at which point, they’ll finally be on track with Windows Versions again, since Windows Server 7 will be right behind it.
Oh another thought on the Windows 7 thing…
7 has always been viewed as a sign of perfection. If W7 is the fixing of Vista which was meant to bring a new “view” for Windows, then perhaps Windows 7 is the Perfect View.
