Best Buy offering big Mac discounts already
I know I was grousing about Black Friday offers all over the intrawebs but this one is so unusual that it’s worth passing on. Rarely do we see vendors offering discounts on MacBook products as Apple seems to control that pretty tightly but Best Buy is already offering up deals on virtually all MacBook models they sell. Most models are a cool $100 off but a few others are noteworthy. The 13-inch new MacBook is discounted $150 making it just $1449, quite a bit cheaper than I recently paid. The biggest deal is this MacBook Air model for $1299:
I assume this is the new old model as it’s got a 1.6 GHz processor. I have a feeling that Kevin will be picking up one of these two models I mentioned for the holidays.
This price on the MacBook Air could sway me from my position of "why would anyone buy an Air?".

Dude, you need more caffeine (as Benjamin Franklin said, “coffee is proof that God loves us, and wants us to be happy”). Your screen shot shows the discounted Macbook Air has a 1.6GHz processor. It is the old version without the NVIDIA graphics.
Patrick
Patrick, right you are. I was actually looking at a whole page of ads when I wrote that and must have glanced at the MacBook ad with a 2 GHz processor. I’ll correct the post.
It’s definitely the old model, but not because of the CPU. New Airs also come in a 1.6GHz CPU model, although there’s more L2 cache on the new ones and faster FSB speeds. Unfortunately, you don’t always get that info at first glance. The giveaway is the RAM. Older models use slower DDR2 memory while the new ones use faster DDR3. Something folks can use to easily identify if good deals are on the old ones or the new ones. Sometimes you only get the short blurb of specs, but this should help quickly identify old models vs. new.
The $150 off 13-inch MB is definitely the new aluminum one. Kevin, you gonna get one?
I just confirmed that… the new 13.3-inch with the 2.4GHz CPU is $150 off. I was actually figuring that Apple would discount by that much on Friday. I assume that’s what they’ll do as Best Buy appears to have tipped their hand. However, this is in stock and available now at my local Best Buy today. Which I just happen to be driving past this afternoon for a parent-teacher conference. Hmmm…..
Even though that is the older model MacBook Air, it is still a great deal, considering Apple is still selling these for $1599 in their stores. Every MacBook, new and old, is discounted right now at Best Buy. The base model, white version is even $100 off, making it $899.
$150 off the 2.4GHz MacBook got me to pull the trigger. My local BestBuy has one waiting for pickup later this afternoon. Unless Apple throws in something else to sweeten the Black Friday deal, I’m feeling like I got the Black Friday price in advance and didn’t have to roll out of bed at 4am to battle the crowds on Friday.
I picked up the lower-tier aluminum MacBook earlier today. $100 off, plus a $50 Best Buy gift card was enough to move me. Especially since I’ll be out of the country on Black Friday and unable to buy anything then. I’m not just Migration Wizard for apps, just data… after a bad experience last time.
Yeah I was also tempted this past Sunday when I ran into the price cuts on the Macbooks. I’m still thinking about. I got one for my wife when they came out for $1499, she gets a school discount. I like that the Macbook is almost as fast as my Macbook Pro 2.2 and usually I have that connected to a 22″ LCD for when I create iMovie, etc… The other nice then about the Macbook is that its very portable and yet has a sweet spot size screen. But for my everyday I still would use my M912 and SC3, but for having power and still portable I think you can’t beat the Macbook.
