Software Removes Need for Stylus on Windows Mobile

virtuamouse_one-hand_screenshot4-240x320The last phone I owned with a stylus was my XV6700 on the Verizon Wireless network. I actually let the blog readers choose the phone for me and you smarties were dead on at the time. It was a great device for me and I hated putting it to pasture. The one thing I wasn’t crazy about was pulling out the stylus for some quick navigation only to return the stylus to it’s silo in hopes of not losing it. Too bad I didn’t have VirtuaMouse One-Hand, which was released a few days ago by Innovisoft.

Despite it’s name, it’s not a one-handed rodent. VirtuaMouse One-Hand is a software application that supports Windows Mobile 2003 on up, provided your device has a directional pad. The software is activated by the press of hardware button and creates a mouse cursor on your screen. Using the D-pad, you move the cursor and can activate clicks. The advantage here is that you don’t need to whip out a stylus, nor do you have to deal with inaccurate screen-taps on a resistive touch-screen. The disadvantage? The app costs $24.95, which in my opinion is a bit much for utility like this. I remember purchasing a three-pack of stylus replacements for $9.95, so I think this would sell better around that price. You can determine if it’s worth the investment after a free, 30-day trial.

  • I just got a Samsung Omnia on Verizon and it came with this functionality built in. It is pretty handy but I quickly moved on to replacing the stock WM inteface with one more finger friendly (in my case SPB mobile shell).

  • I haven’t tried it myself, but I somehow don’t think that it’s necessarily faster to steer the cursor with the d-pad than it would be to pull out the stylus and do the old-fashioned tap-tap-tap. And maybe I am just motorically challenged, but doing it with one hand?

  • Why?…HTC Touch series comes with Large Title Bar. On my Sprint Diamond, I only have to use the stylus on old programs like Total Commander. Almost everything works with my thick thumb after tweaking things a bit. :P

  • I would have bought this for my wizard if it still worked. I loved taking the keyboard out and using it like a mid.

The Iris web browser has this functionality built in which was the sole reason I kept using it.
