SugarSync Adds Shared Folders to Cloud Service
Cloud services and data synchronization continue to grow and SugarSync is the latest to add new features. Today they introduced SugarSync v1.5 which adds a feature I’ve come to adore in other offerings: Shared Folders. I use this feature in Dropbox all the time because it’s far easier and less bandwidth intensive to point someone to large files than it is to send them. A perfect example of this usage is how we do our podcast. We used to FTP our individual audio files to a server and then I’d have to pull them back down manually. With a shared folder, James and Matt simply upload their tracks to the cloud and I have a synchronized folder on my desktop that automatically pulls their files down. Simple and automatic; well, for me it is. Not so much for James and Matt although they could just save their file to a locally synchronized folder.
SugarSync v1.5 also adds a progress meter for file transfers, support for local time in file history, backing up of hidden Windows files, and easier navigation. Sharpcast, the company behind SugarSync, says that the new feature will be rolled out to users over the next week. You can try SugarSync at no charge for 45-days and pricing starts at $2.49 per month for 10GB of storage.
Wonder how much of this is available on the Mac. Seems like the SugarSync OS X client software trails the Windows version. Since migrating to the 13″ MacBook a month or so ago, I haven’t reinstalled the software (I have an annual subscription). Maybe it’s time for another look. One of the things that irked me was if I make changes in iPhone, like merging events, they didn’t appear in my online albums. I was kinda hoping this would replace MobileMe galleries… in addition to Mozy and Dropbox.
The Mac client in 1.5 has functional parity with the Windows one.
Is it finally possible to get rid of the dock icon in the mac version, since clicking on it didn’t work in the first place?
