Mobile Tech Minutes: Wilson Electronics iBooster for iPhone

Folks that drive around all day surely appreciate good cellular reception. My local area is generally good with both AT&T and Verizon, but don’t you just hate driving around and watching the signal strength disappear faster than the gas in your tank?

Wilson Electronics has a potential solution in their iBooster for Apple’s iPhone. It’s pricey at $240 or more, but does it work? I’ll give you a short introduction to the iBooster and then we’ll give it a test or two on the road.

  • Holy crap – just pay the $175 termination fee and go to Verizon or Sprint. Really, the iPhone is not worth this type of solution for ATT’s crappy service.

  • wow i dont think that this is worth it… its very large and you must be in your car.. i would like if you could use it in your home as well. Also i must be a pain to put this against your ears are talk into it.

    • Definitely not a product for everyone, but with a 12V adapter in your home, you should be able to use it. An AT&T femtocell unit would likely be better in that scenario though. BTW: you’re not putting this against your ears… that’s what Bluetooth headsets are for. ;)

  • Just found this website. I, too, wish you were able to find a one-bar, poor signal area. I live in a very rural location and have tried other amplifier products, which also included an external antenna for the car. They just didn’t work well since the originating signal was so terrible.

However, the pickup in the driveway has ON-STAR, and it has a solid signal. I was hoping any cell phone I tried with the amp/external antenna, no matter what service, would work, but no go. I’ve tried Cellular One, AT&T, and Verizon branded phones.
