Do You Use Your Phone Naked?

iphone-leather-case-282First of all, get your mind out of the gutter. By “use your phone naked” I mean without a protective case. You knew that’s what I meant, too; you should be ashamed of yourself.  :)  Seriously, I use a lot of thin and light smartphones and I often think I should be using some sort of protective case for them. It wouldn’t take too big of a disaster to have terrible results with some of these phones, given how thin and light they are.

When you throw the large touch-screens into the mix the risk is amplified, although to be honest I haven’t even come close to damaging any of my phones. I know that some folks put their bright, shiny new phone into a case almost as soon as they get it and I can’t fault that. Every time I consider doing the same, though, I immediately lose the desire to take my thin, svelte phone with the big touch-screen and make it bigger, bulkier and heavier by encasing it in plastic or leather. It’s a tough call for me. So how about you, do you use your phone in a case to protect it from falls and other mishaps? Let us know in the comments along with what case you use for your phone. Maybe I’ll get over my fear of safe phoning. You know what I mean.

  • I have the same issue about putting my phone in a case; it will make it too bulky. Since I’m good at not dropping my phones I simply opt for scratch protection by putting on plastic over it (screen protector plastic).

  • Cases are annoying, they make gadgets a lot bigger. This is why I love metal gadgets – they are much harder to scratch (except for chrome iPods).

  • My phone wears less than a $2 hooker, but then again I prefer phones that are a bit more durable, so they like to be free of constraint. :)

  • I’m right there with you on this one. My idea of a case is putting my iPhone in my pocket by itself.

  • I have a plastic protective film on my Blackjack to protect it from basic wear and tear and scratches. As a girl geek, I do slip it into a case to toss it into my purse or bag, but when in use it comes out of the slip case.

  • I’ve got big clumsy hands and my iPhone would die without a protective case.

  • “pocket by itself” is a great way to put it..

  • Started with a full-body InvisibleShield on my iPhone before switching to a Griffin iClarifi case to get the close-up lens though I left the IS screen shield on. I like cases that offer utility, while the InvisibleShield is so indestructible that I scrub the screen clean of anything.

  • I think I would prefer to use my iPhone without a case, but sadly it always goes directly from the box into a case. I also use a screen protector.

This means I have no chance for any scratching, it also means I will get a better resale value when Apple releases the next model.

  • iPhone 3G, pocket by itself. I find it less slippery than the original, and most cases don’t protect the real point of vulnerability: the dock port, which can easily fill with lint and eventually cause trouble. While I did case my original iPhone to reduce the slip factor, i haven’t routinely used a phone case in about 6 years.

  • During the last 10 years, I’ve damaged my PDA or cell phones only twice. Both times, I dropped them when I tried to get them out of the case. Needless to say, I now carry my iPhone without a case. I have a screen protector on it, but I think even it is not necessary.

  • InvisibleShield by ZAGG is pretty good but Best Skins Ever is about 1/3 the price for the same stuff. It works great. I have them on a HTC Advantage, a AT&T 8525 and now an iPhone. No it isn’t a hard shell plastic case but it doesn’t add any measurable size. It has a nice grip that keeps it from slipping from my hands but still goes in and out of a pocket easily and is indestructible. I use a case when I have to but the skin is there all the time.

  • I usually look for a case I can loop onto my belt. I want my phone with me everywhere in a way that doesn’t require me to keep track of it – did I put it on the desk? Is it in my jacket pocket? It’s ringing, now where the heck is it?

Currently using the Krusell Hector case for my HTC Touch HD. The case I got is for the iPhone but since they are practically identical size-wise it works perfectly.

I use the phone “au natural” ;) but always carry and store it in the belt case. It takes less than a second to flip up the magnetic cover and push the phone up and out of the case into my hand too, very practical all round.

Of course opinions on belt cases differ… I think “professional, very practical” and others think “super nerd” just one minor step removed from a fanny pack… But then again, I am a nerd so I’m fine with it.

  • I have 4 cases for my iPhone but I only use 1 of them, the only one that doesn’t add much bulk to it; it even gives my iPhone a fresh and even more stylish look! Here James, you can have a look : http://www.sourcingmap.com/crimson-and-black-hard-plastic-case-for-apple-iphone-p-22153.html
Just know that the picture portrayed doesn’t fully show how attractive it actually makes your iPhone looks!

  • I hadn’t used a case in years when using clamshell phones, but cased my iPhone and put a screen protector on it immediately so that I can throw it in my briefcase or pocket with wallet, keys, power adapter and other scratchy things and not worry about it. It’s one of those Speck blocky looking cases they sell at the Apple store, and while it does increase the size of the phone a bit (it’s light but the cushiony rubber is bulky), having dropped the phone a couple of times since getting it, I’m happy to bear that extra size.

  • I don’t have a girly fashion phone like most of the posters here so I don’t mind a few scratches. I’ve dropped my present device, nokia E90, at least 3 times onto the floor and it hasn’t hurt it at all.

  • Naked! Apple didn’t make the thing slim just to put it in a case. I’d rather take the risk, and so far, haven’t regretted it.

  • I keep my iPhone 3G in half a case: http://www.powersupportusa.com/product/show/clear-air-jacket-for-iphone-3g

The Air Jacket covers the back, but doesn’t quite make it up to the screen. For that, I have a wee screen protector. It doesn’t add much bulk at all, and when my headphone cable was snagged, sending the iPhone flying into the pavement, the case did its job.

I’d tried cases with more coverage, and they tend to ruin the usability of the iPhone.

  • I have a G1 that I keep as the only thing in my right hand pocket, so I don’t have to worry about keys or change scratching the screen. I always keep the screen facing my thigh, so I don’t have to worry about bumping into a table and breaking it. I’ve never had a problem with this method.

  • I own a HTC TyTNII and I use it naked. I find all these housing awful and they all destroy the look of the phone. Of course, the counter part is that it felt on the ground one or two times in two years but luckily without serious damage.

    Gece — 1:28 PM on March 25, 2009 Reply

  • No case. In the pocket. It’s kinda like a car. By putting anything on the bumpers to protect if from damage, you make it look totally ugly. Then the justification as made be an earlier poster – it will have higher resale value. But you have to live with the ugliness. I’d rather have my phone (and car!) get a little dinged up, but enjoy them without compromise while they’re mine. Nothing wrong with a little patina of use.

Can you really get that much money selling a previous generation phone? I imagine the amount of money added onto the sale by it being in new condition from being in a case is the same amount of money you spent on the case.

  • DLO VideoShell and a screen protector. I never notice any additional weight or bulk.

  • I am naked. Right now (from my iPhone) ;-)

    admin — 7:43 PM on March 25, 2009 Reply

  • Always naked… Same reason there are no slim cases that seem to protect with out making it to big/heavy.

Also work won’t pay for cases but they have no problem replacing any phone when it’s broken so it’s cheaper to replace the phone (cheaper for me not my employer) if anything happens.

  • As a Touch Pro Owner, I have been using it as a pocket only. I have a leather case for the belt but, I have strayed away. However, last week, my phone met paperclip in my pocket and know I have to stare at a small but very annoying scratch on the screen. Argg… None the less, I am getting full body skin and will not regret it.

Can’t wait for the touch pro2. Woot.
