I'd think it uses the same infrastructure apple has in place for the iTunes music distribution anyway, so I don't think it's going to cost them a fortune to distribute free apps. And besides, what's their alternative, given that they are the ones who insisted on the closed system? I'd much prefer the old days of Palm/Pocket PC where I could find Apps all over the place, instead of having to deal with a monopoly. Big bucks?
