OQO Model 02+ Pre-orders Canceled- the End is Near?

oqo-model-022We recently broke the news that OQO, the maker of the little executive candy, was in trouble and facing an uncertain future. That news was picked up all over the web and while the company has not officially responded with information about their situation, word is leaking out that all pre-orders for the OQO Model 02+ have been canceled.  That definitely sounds like the death knell for a cool company that pushed the envelope of mobile computing.

  • It’s certainly not looking good for OQO, but all orders haven’t been canceled (yet?). My pre-order for the OQO 2+ still is sitting there in it’s received status.

I was really looking forward to the improved performance from an Intel chip vs. the current 02, but I’m also thinking the $2,300 I had set aside for the fully loaded 02+ will look good in my bank account until I find some other cool toy to invest in.

I have to say after reading your experience with the Viliv so far, I was questioning the need to spend an extra $1500 for the OQO.

  • ^^^ yeah, that $2300 would buy TWO new devices :)

I just got a DSLR camera and I have been using my u810 more because it has a card reader vs my OQO 02 which has no card reader, no camera, no fingerprint scanner, etc..

It is the best form (no argument from me) with a keyboard that isn’t beat, but $2300 would look nice in a bank account :)

  • I would be very sad to see them go. IMHO, the biggest killer has been their pricing. Their devices have consistently been out of the reach of most customers (including moi), and now that they are about to release a cheaper device with an interesting spec bump, their existence is at risk.

    IT’S A CRYING SHAME !

  • ^^^ wow and while they have none listed, the current retail on an 02 is $749. Sounds like I need to list mine on eBay while it will still fetch anything. Anyone got an idea on what this will do to warranties? Are there even going to be any parts even if we had to pay for repairs?

  • I little sad but they should have seen it comming years ago. People have never rushed out to buy their product as it does not have a regular keyboard. A computer that is small and pocket size is great, but if you only provide thumb version of a so called keyboard people will not find it useful enough to buy and say it is overpriced. Overpriced because it can not fully replace any other PC you have. That is why they have done so poorly and will likely be another company out of business whom did not make the right product people want to buy.

  • The Viliv is gorgeous, James, but lack of full tablet features is the deal breaker for me. I’m not in a position to pre-order the oqo 2+, but I was looking at ordering one this summer.

I can sit in meetings with a tablet or my Samsung Q1, and I can mark up PPTs and documents on a projector. Having all that on a device that fits in my pocket, with enough RAM to run several programs simultaneously looks fantastic. The specs of the 2+ are just unparalleled.

  • That, sir, would be a seriously cool device.

  • It’s a shame. i really liked the look of their devices but they were always far too expensive. i have a feeling that the main reson for their downfall was their inablility to adapt to the turbulent market. they didn’t bring out devices that would compete with the netbook (in terms of pricing and functionality) and thus this is the result unfortunatly. It will be a shame to see them go though.
