Mobile Tech Minutes- Using the Viliv S5 UMPC

I’ve been getting asked by folks how I use the Viliv S5 UMPC most often; I can narrow it down to two distinct scenarios. In this video I show how I am able to use the UMPC in my hands in portrait orientation and I then show it off as a little desktop.  Enjoy.

  • Nice device. I think it would be better with a 7″ screen, as the 1024×600 is a little difficult to work with on the 5″ screen.

  • I agree I would rather have a 7″ screen. Right now I am drooling over a nice tc1100.

  • On the portrait mode I would rather use an iPhone. I find the zooming capabilities of mobile Safari absolutely indispensable for such small screens. On the landscape mode this reminds me of what I would do 3-4 years ago but not anymore. Now, I would rather have a small netbook (the smallest I could find) instead of a tiny screen with a separate huge keyboard. Everybody has his/her own preferences I guess…

    • I’m with you, John. Some days I really miss my Sony UX. But then I remember all the other stuff I used to have to carry with it to be really productive. I can work happily on a small screen but it doesnt make sense if you are carrying all the “extras” not to just have it all in one.

James, I just can’t see why you gave up your P1620 only to get this. Sure it’s cool but if you have to have a keyboard/mouse etc there any way you may as well have kept the P1620.

    • Gordon, I don’t have to have anything to get good use out of it, like right now. Remember that the P1620 cost almost $2000 more than this too.

    • I believe you do not see Fastweb. It is much better than Safari. I like dual browing system of viliv S5, Fastweb and Explorer.

  • Seem to have a problem playing the video – won’t start. Anyone else have the same issue?

  • I’ve searched for gravity drag on the internet and your site and cant find any mention of it. Can you point me in the right direction please, it looks useful.

  • The more I see this device the more I’m digging it.

I used to have a Fujitsu U2010, but sold that off within weeks. Sure you get long battery life but you’re carrying the tiny device with a huge battery. Plus it was just too slow, got on my nerves. I did look at the P1630 but I want long battery life without huge ugly batteries.

What I like about the Viliv is it’s sooo small does everything a real PC does, AND has very snappy performance (from what I can see on the video). Much better than the Vista U2010 and with a slower processor (gotta love XP). Oh and the best part is you get long battery life without the device looking retarded.

James, can you give us an indication of how much battery life on average you’re getting with the S5 in real life usage?

Anyway, tough decision get the S5 or wait for the X70 Atom. Hmmm.

    • I am getting a full 5 hours doing nothing special with power management. A second battery would give 10 hours easily and that would be very nice.

    • Thanks James, 5hrs is on the lower side from what I was hoping but still acceptable. I have an iphone so between the two I’d proably be set in terms of my mobile needs.

Have you tried 720p video? Does it really work as advertised? That’s another reason I gave up the U2010.

1080p is probably out of the question but it would be nice if someone tried it :) Having this as a possible home theater machine would be interesting.

      Jake — 3:02 PM on May 7, 2009 Reply

    • 720p works out of the box. Some 1080p plays as well, most likely because the S5 ships with Cyberlink PowerDVD and K-lite preinstalled.

    • Thanks, so their claim of 720p is at least real. The only two things that should be low cost but would’ve greatly increased the experience is putting in:
      1. Mic
      2. SD or MicroSD slot

A camera would’ve just taken it over the top. Can you imagine using this with the GPS AND the camera in your car? It would be mounted on your dash anyway while you drive and at the same time you could record video (like the police do) and if you ever get into an accident you have all the proof you ever need.

Perhaps they will put these features into the X70 Atom or the next iteration, the S6?

      Viliv, you listening??? :)

  • can the portrait mode rotate the other way? the position of the d-pad looks awkward. on the bottom at least it’ll feel like a HUGE phone :)

  • James – Thanks for a terrific video. This one is definitely not for me. The UMID looks more appealing. But, I will wait to see what Apple comes out with.

  • James – off topic, but what camera were you using for this video?

    Dave — 5:16 AM on May 8, 2009 Reply

  • So there is no mic feature? Its going to make Skyping a little more difficult.

    Mike — 7:24 PM on May 9, 2009 Reply

  • Does Google maps work with the GPS in the S5?
