The folks at Phoenix, makers of the BIOS in most laptops, have been thinking about laptop security. They have developed a new product that looks extremely useful for those who work in public settings with a laptop. Phoenix Freeze simply pairs to a Bluetooth phone and then shuts the laptop down when the phone gets a configurable distance away from it. The laptop screen can also be configured to turn off when this happens. The best part about Phoenix Freeze is that it’s a free download from the great folks at Phoenix. To see Phoenix Freeze in action, check out the video below:

UPDATE: users have reported that this “free” download is in fact a 14-day trial only. There is no mention of this anywhere on the Phoenix site nor a price for how much the program will cost to continue using it. It’s also reported that during the install the statement is made that if you use a Bluetooth mouse or other device on the laptop that you CANNOT also use Freeze. Sounds like Phoenix needs to get their act together to me.
