UPDATE: Use Your Phone to Lock Up Your Laptop When You Walk Away- Phoenix Freeze
The folks at Phoenix, makers of the BIOS in most laptops, have been thinking about laptop security. They have developed a new product that looks extremely useful for those who work in public settings with a laptop. Phoenix Freeze simply pairs to a Bluetooth phone and then shuts the laptop down when the phone gets a configurable distance away from it. The laptop screen can also be configured to turn off when this happens. The best part about Phoenix Freeze is that it’s a free download from the great folks at Phoenix. UPDATE: users have reported that this “free” download is in fact a 14-day trial only. There is no mention of this anywhere on the Phoenix site nor a price for how much the program will cost to continue using it. It’s also reported that during the install the statement is made that if you use a Bluetooth mouse or other device on the laptop that you CANNOT also use Freeze. Sounds like Phoenix needs to get their act together to me.

PhoenixFreeze is only a 14 day trial, then you have to pay, but they don’t show the price anywhere.
“This Version of Freeze does not support Bluetooth wireless mice, keyboards, and headsets. DO NOT INSTALL if you use such devices on this computer.”
This message popped up on installation. Guess I need to wait for a newer version?
Too bad about all the limitations… it’s definitely a brilliant idea.
