Dynamism Viliv S5 UMPC Special Offer Redux
The folks at Dynamism want to remind everyone that their special promotion for the Viliv S5 Premium UMPC goes live today at 1:00 p.m. EDT. The company has greatly expanded its order fulfillment capacity and does not expect the problems that some experienced with the original offer. Dynamism is offering the Viliv S5, a case, second battery, and car kit (mount and power adapter) for $599. The company has 400 of these babies to offer, and it’s doubtful there will be a part three to this promotion, so if you’re planning to pick up the S5 for your tool kit as I did, then now would be the time.

I have mine from the first go around and it is WAY COOL! But if your eyes are old it’ll be tough!
In mini-desktop mode (à la James), I agree it’s a bit “squinty,” but it works very well for me in handheld mode. I tweaked up the dpi (105%) and am very happy with it.
By the way, believe the hype everyone, this thing rocks. Ultimately its greatest limitations are lack of 3G and SSD – and for me that’s no showstopper.
Help me out here guys.
I really want to buy it
But … the only reason I can have to do it is to use it besides the obvious usages also as a GPS platform and a Skype phone. As I think I remember it has a GPS, how can I turn it to be Skype enabled without it having a mic? (i guess I will have to forget about the cam)

A Bluetooth headset will do the trick.
Or a USB headset, for that matter.
For maximum portability and flexibility, you’ll want to use a Bluetooth headset. USB would work all right, but you’d have an awkward cable sticking out of the side, too accident-prone for me.
When I plug in headphones on my S5, the Realtek software pops up and asks whether I’ve plugged in headphones or a microphone. This makes me think that you could plug any microphone in that has a 3.5mm jack and use it with skype. I also saw some really small microphones on ebay for $10 that have a 3.5mm jack. They were slightly larger than a pencil eraser and wouldn’t look too obnoxious sticking out of the S5, IMO.
I am feeling very technology challenged now
Thanks for the clarification – hahaha.
Well I ordered mine at 1pm and was completed without any issue at 1:06PM. So all I can say is so far so good. BTW, as a matter of point, I did call and ask if they would charge anything in any way to my credit card prior to shipping and was told definitely not.
After all the great reviews I read on this little guy, I just couldnt say no! My order went through just fine, I think some are still available now!
I felt the same way. As much as I hate to buy anything new, I love that “next to new” killer used pricing, no point in waiting and I feel the Bonus accessories will try and hold our value an extra 60 days maybe !!!
I’m eagerly waiting for mine also. I tried ordering during the first pre-sale and it turned out to be an exercise in frustration. Glad they fixed the issues this time because my order went through this morning as smooth as could be.
is there a decent forum for these? i ordered mine this go around and wouldn’t mind a community to see what others have come up with for them…

Is there anywhere to try or see this device before buying? I am in New York City. Are any retail stores expected to carry this?
I’m not aware of anywhere.
I tried to order one on Dynamism’s first offer, but got hung up forever in the queue and the order never went through. I successfully ordered one on the second offer and all went well — UNTIL.
They said the ship date was expected to be 26 May. I was surprised on Thursday, 21 May, when I got an e-mail saying it was shipped. Hooray! But then I went into FedEx hell. Three-day shipping meant that a box shipped on Thursday morning in Chicago would be delivered 600 miles away the NEXT WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON!
Dynamism charged a huge amount for FedEx shipping, at least twice actual cost. I opted for “Three day saver,” which was $42.18 for a four pound box from Chicago to Virginia. On early Saturday morning, the FedEx website showed that the box was sitting at a FedEx facility 12 miles and 15 minutes drive from my house. The facility was open until 5:00 pm.
I called FedEx, and they said the box cannot be released until Wednesday as that is the term of the contract with the shipper.
That same box could have been shipped US Priority Mail and insured for the entire amount and delivered Saturday for $22.90.
I am really disappointed in both Dynamism and FedEx. I think I’ll take my business elsewhere.
What are peoples’ thoughts on listening to music on this device while running or at the gym? I imagine the weight and size may be annoying while running. Also, the HDD is not solid state. The small spinning disks probably won’t appreciate the constant bumping. Does anyone think this should not be an issue?
I’m looking to finally replace my palm tungsten T5. This device is the top contender so far.
I know fedex can be a pain sometimes (won’t let you pickup early) but it’s the only company I use for high dollar products for my own company as well. Have you ever tried getting your money back after purchasing insurance and having an item lost by USPS? It’s a serious hassle. I have had problems with UPS too. While agree Dynamism charged more then the actual cost, it was worth it to me. I’m sure some of that had to do with the increase in the amount of packing and shipping they would normally deal with in a day. Employees cost money. That’s my guess anyways.
I was more then happy with my purchase and the service I received from dynamism. To me the quality of the products and standing behind them means more then waiting a couple of extra days.
