Why We’re Buying a Palm Pre

The official announcement today of the June 6 release of the Palm Pre has everyone buzzing and asking who will be buying one. Kevin and I have been impressed with the Pre for a long time and after the launch announcement today I looked back and found a geek session we had where we talked about what impressed us the most about the Pre. I figured it would be a good idea to share that chat again so step into the time machine and find out why we are going to buy a Palm Pre. (The 26-minute video we keep referring to is this one.)

  • Frankly I’m pretty annoyed with this mail in rebate bullshit. Yeah the pre looks intresting and if Apple dose not release something cool in june then it might be worth getting… maybe. The thing is it’s not 199, it’s 299 out your pocket then you have to play rebate roulette? Screw that.

  • In reality it isn’t even $300, it is $360 if you want the touchstone (one of the really compelling features!) then a $100 MIR.

What is Palm thinking? You can walk out of Best Buy with a similar 8 gig iPhone for $200, or $300 for 16 gig. Add a cradle for $30 more if you really care.

  • How do think the Pre stacks up against the also upcoming Nokia N97 (32 GB, slide-out keyboard, 5 MP camera, etc)?

  • With the onslaught of so many new and compelling smartphones, I think it would be great if someone (Like jk) would put together a matrix, comparing all the important features of the handsets. Maybe rating or voting (by us, your faithful) to see where the real interest lies.

  • @martint – you can also walk out of Best Buy with the Pre for $199. Best Buy gives you the rebate on the spot.

I was going to buy one right away, but I found out yesterday the Touch Pro 2 may be out in June also. I might wait until that hits before I actually pull the trigger on either.

  • The showed it with the Vodaphone card at the WMC in Spain back in February. Palm has always said it will be available in EUR in the “second half” of 09.
