ASUS 1101 HA Netbook: 11 Inches of Screen, 11 Hours of Run Time
ASUS has officially announced its “big boy” netbook, which is part of the thin and light Seashell line. With an 11.6-inch display, I would have called it the Conch, but what do I know? It’s just a bigger screen, but there are more pixels than a patch of plankton, too: the resolution is 1366 x 768. ASUS inserts a 160GB hard drive but also offers 10GB of online Eee Storage because everyone could use a little more cloud in their lives.
The 1101HA is powered by an Intel Atom (Z-series, not N-series) paired with one gigabyte of memory. ASUS is claiming a battery life of up to 11 hours, but I’m bit skeptical about that, even with a 6-cell battery. The larger screen is sure to offset any power efficiency gains made by using the Silverthorne Atom chipset. But if I could get 7-8 hours, I’d be happy. More would be a bonus. Holding this up to my ear and hearing the ocean would be the ultimate. I haven’t seen any official word on price or availability yet.
We need to be told how you posted this. Presumably the fibre’s not yet working?
I was going to use my EVDO 3G adapter, but the cutover from DSL to FiOS was only about 30 minutes. I banged this out on DSL while the installation process was happening. If there were any issues, I’d be just fine on 3G. The FiOS is now working though. It’s SMOKIN’!
So why are all of these netbooks increasing in screen size recently? I thought the idea was a smaller device? Although I do love the battery life claims, I wonder how it runs Windows 7…
My opinion is that the larger screened devices are better sellers than the smaller ones. Most everyday consumers aren’t ready for or willing to use a device with a smaller screen when they can use a machine with a slightly bigger screen. Just my $0.02.
Well, I for one already have a Nokia Internet Tablet for the small size; none of the netbooks fits in my pocket, anyway. I thought the idea behind the small size was that those LCD panels were cheap and plentiful.
Now I’m looking for a portable computer (read: small, light) with a high resolution screen. This 1366×768 screen would do, but I’m more worried about supporting the software that I want to run, particularly a mainstream Linux. Personally, I wouldn’t mind a 9″ screen; my eyes are sharp enough to handle tiny text, but devices that are small, light, and have high resolution screens are still pretty expensive.
I think this 11.6″ inch might be the perfect size for me. I’m just really sad they went with the Z-series Atom. Most reviews I’ve read haven’t been too flattering about that one.
I also find it peculiar that the device is comparatively thicker than the 1008H seashell model. I would’ve thought that a larger footprint would allow them to keep it really skinny. As it stands now it looks pretty chubby and mediocre.
The 11.6″ screen is LED; the 10.1″ screens are not. I don’t think the energy difference between them will be much.
Nearly all of the 10-inch netbooks (and 8.9-inch models, for that matter) that have hit the market in the last year are LED-backlit. In fact, I can’t think of a currently available netbook model that isn’t LED-backlit.
Oh fudge. I hate it when that happens.
In my defense, the press release mentioned LED only for the 11.6, not the 10.1. Of course, press releases don’t always mention everything.
Where can I get the new 1101? Nobody seams to have it, nor know how much is costs!

The 11.6 inch size is actually a little too big for me. I use a 1001HE and am about to pick up a 1005HA for my wife. For me portability is key but at the ~12″ size, I don’t think there’s a better deal.
