Viliv X70EX UMPC to Sell in U.S. for $599

Since I started covering the loaner Viliv X70EX UMPC that was sent by the folks at Viliv, I have been asked repeatedly how much this device is going to cost in the U.S. I just heard from Dynamism that it is going to carry the X70, and it’s put up a web page with lots of information. What may be the most important piece of information is the starting price listed, which is $599. That puts the 7-inch X70 near the same price as the 5-inch S5. Wow, that is cheaper than I expected.

  • Wow, I was not expecting that. A good price and a good device equals a device I want.

  • I wonder if the faster processer and bigger SSD model will go for $100 or $200 more. 16GB is too small for me.

(Intel Atom Z520 1.3GHz , 1GB Ram, 32GB Solid State HD, GPS, Windows XP Home)

  • As in many cases, each with his own show stoppers.
I am still waiting for something which is:
    1. Pocketable
    2. Run a full OS (for me that is Windows XP/7, Ubuntu or Android)
    3. Can be used as full Skype phone and hopefully also be a real cell phone.

Concerning Viliv, the S5 failed on not having a built in mic and a web cam. And the X70 failed on not being pocketable. Very personal as stated.

As for the last sub-item, maybe Archos will prove the optimal way to go with later this week. At least until we get a Moorstown cell device next year.

    • I agree, they should have done a little more on the Viliv S5. My 4 year old Axim x50v pocket pc has BOTH an SD and CF slot plus a built-in mic. I still use it as a skype phone and GPS device (using a bluetooth gps receiver).

I don’t see what the business decision was to not include an SD slot and built-in mic at a bare minimum. Any portable device that is marketed as a computer should include those two things.

As it stands I guess they want people to go for the x70 for the full computing experience.

  • What a disappointment, I can’t believe they are offering a 1.2ghz machine and 16gb SSD, on a machine that’s already cpu challenged? Do they realize that it’s on par with small netbooks from last year but at a price point that’s much higher?

Come on Viliv, put out a hard drive version with the 1.3, at least.

    • I concur…

The only model I’d go for (if I doesn’t take into account my recently-received S5) would have at least a 1.3GHz cpu, and a good old hard drive (I’m not sold on SSDs yet).
I’m curious of what price it would sell for.

  • What about screen resolution?

  • The Viliv site mentions Linux will be available on the X70 but Dynamism only mentions the XP version. Does anyone know what Linux it will be and where it will be available? Hopefully not Korea only!

  • So Mr. Kendrick….
You’ve played with both units (and bought the S5 I believe). Any buyers remorse? Or are you seriously thinking of “uprgrading”?

  • I received an email from Dynamism today announcing pre-order specials ($195 worth of free accessories) on the X70. I already have an S5, and debating whether the X70 is worth picking up to be my couch potato reader. Go to the Dynamism website to checkout the deals.
