The praise goes to Apple because they did what no one else could. They transformed something that was relegated to geek duty into something that every non-geek wanted to have.

I love the idea of getting rid of my smartphone, and saving a few bucks.

However, at this point, I'm stuck. It's the main tool in my daily life that I simply cannot get through my day without.

Honestly, I wish I had never discovered smartphones. Ignorance is bliss.

And once upon a time, not so long ago, email wasn't "necessary". Nor is television, alchohol, motor cars and Jazz.

But they, like smartphones, are useful to many and enhance our enjoyment of life. YMMV.

Smartphones are not necessary.

I hate receiving an email that announces/advertises some brand of phone.

What I said was that the marketing for the iPhone directed at the consumer brought all of this capability to the regular folks. I stand by that assertion. Windows Mobile was never marketed at anybody.

Not sure what the point of your comment is Luscious, the point here is that we have a tipping point being reached which has taken us from a world of cellphones to smartphones. Whether WinMo or Palm ushered in this era, I doubt anyone can deny that the iPhone has moved this category of tool into the public consciousness.
Personzl preference is irrelevant

I can't say the praise goes entirely to Apple. Pocket PC phones were around long before the iPhone and were far superior in functionality. The iPhone is simply a "pocket pc for dummies" - all Apple did was make the features geeks and pro's use consumer-friendly.

With the new devices coming out from the likes of HTC and MS now committed to WinMo 7, the pocket pc phone is far from gone. While it may not reach the mass appeal as the iPhone has, the PPC phone has, for me at least, become the tool of my choice.
