Got the iPhone 3GS? Don’t Use Magnetic Cases

iPhone 3GS CompassThe iPhone 3GS has a few new features that the older models lack. One of those features is the compass, which is pretty useful in mapping apps. Compasses use magnets to point out where the heck north is and it only makes sense that cases with magnetic closures might cause trouble. Word of such trouble is beginning to appear so buyer beware.

Gearlog is reporting that when using a case with a magnetic flap, their iPhone 3GS has to have the compass recalibrated every single time they try to use it. Using a case with Velcro closures produces no problems, it’s only those pesky magnetic ones. I have used numerous phones with magnetic cases with no problems, but then they didn’t have that little magnetic compass feature so this is only logical.

  • Actually, I wouldn’t use a magnetic case for ANY phone. My dad used one that attached to his belt a while back with a Verizon CDMA phone, and when it was in the case, the phone would not wring, due to the magnet. Not quite sure why, but once he realized what was causing his missed calls, he was much happier.

  • Very interesting info about the magnetic cases. Seems the 3gs is having its share of issues there seem to be a rash of moderate to extreme overheating issue stories popping up on the net. http://gizmodo.com/5303135/white-iphone-3gs-overheats-to-the-point-of-discoloration

  • My son had a nokia slider and it used a magnet and detector to tell when the slide was open. When he put it in a mag case it activated the keyboard with obvious results.

Back on subject … I just got a new belt case the other day and did my 3GS UG today…dang!

  • It says right on the iPhone 3Gs website (in little gray letters) that the compass may be affected by nearby magnetic fields.

Makes sense that a magnet in the case, so close to the phone, would be one of those fields.

  • why do you need a magnetic flap after all?! there are so many alternative solutions for this problem… for example here:

i don’t like the idea to combine magnets with electronic instruments, when it is not necessary!
