Apple Opens Drive-Thru iPhone Screen Replacement

brokeniphoneOK, you can’t really drive your iPhone with a broken screen through the Apple store, but you can take it in for a screen replacement. Apple has begun replacing broken screens on iPhones right there in the store. The screen replacements under warranty are free, of course, but those without that precious warranty will pony up $199.

I’m not sure how often iPhone owners are cracking their screens, but they’re covered now by the local Geniuses in the store. Are there a lot of people dropping their iPhones? Just looking at the photo on the right hurts.

  • About 2ish months ago, I brought my iPhone 3G into the Genius Bar in Kenwood (Cinci, OH) because I had dust between the touch surface and the image surface of the screen. The Genius told me they could swap out the screen right there (under warranty) and 15 mins later I was walking out with my own iPhone, everything intact. he said it was the FIRST DAY they were qualified to do it. It was cool, but I didn’t realize is was “news.”

    • Do they actually replace the screen or do they replace the whole phone? The phone in the picture looks like it’s so broken that it would be difficult to just repair the screen.

    • They used to replace the whole phone, now the screen. That’s what is different, that and that they do it in the store. No more sending the phone away.

  • Being an iPhone newbie, this seems like a really good thing during your first year of warranty.

Does any other mfg’er cover cracked or broken screens (which in most cases is user error) in the 1st year for free?

  • Just had this happen to me for the second time. They’re great phones, but this time it cracked when I dropped it in the grass. The first time this happened, I paid $200 at the Apple Store for a new phone. However, this time, I found a somewhat more affordable solution. If you are in the Dallas area, I would recommend CrackedPhoneScreen.com. They will replace the cracked face for $89.99 while you wait. It took the technician a few minutes and the phone is as good as new. You can even mail them your phone and they will fix it and mail it back. Their number is (214) 550-0707 and their web site is http://www.crackedphonescreen.com

  • I recently had my phone crack and I took it in to the apple store, eager to hear that they now repalaced the screens. What was failed to be mentioned to me is that they charge $199 to repair the screen. (hmm seems kinda high, knowing that THAT IS WHAT I PAID FOR THE PHONE!) I was very upset until I found http://www.iphone3gscreenrepair.com. They repaired my iPhone 3G screen for only $69.99 and it looked like new. They even offered me a 1 year warranty on the product. I was very impressed!

  • I went to the Apple store in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and they told me my warranty was void and it was cost $199.99 to fix my phone I paid over $500 for!!!! I found an iPhone repair expert in Southeast Wisconsin. I talked to Patrick on the phone and assured me he could have it done in 15 minutes and shipped back to me same day. Low and behold he received it November 3 and shipped it out same day. Had it back in my hands the next morning. Check out http://www.midwestiphonerepair.com . Very nice guy, he covered my shipping and it only costed me $79!! What a bargain for the whole experience! http://www.midwestiphonerepair.com
