Palm Pre Tip of the Day- Open Links in New Browser Window
I was playing around with the Palm Pre browser the other day, trying to come up with a way to get links to open in a new window. Sometimes I don’t want to leave the current window but want to click a link. I’m probably the only person on the planet who didn’t know how to do this, but I found a way that works consistently so here it is for those who might also need to know.
With the browser window open (and active), hold down the Orange key and press any other key without a SYM alternative. I just use the space bar for this. While still holding down the Orange key, release the space bar and tap on the link you want to open. Release the Orange key and a new browser window should open with the new link page active. That’s it.
This is a clumsy method, but it works consistently and I’m using it now. If you have a better method that doesn’t require playing Twister with your Pre, please leave it in the comments.

Not on my Pre running webOS 1.0.4 it doesn’t. Anyone else?
Mine neither. It doesn’t do anything with just the orange key except wait for another key.

Not working on mine without another button, but I thought I had to hold the space down while doing it previously. Hold Orange, press and release space, tap link is a lot easier than hold Orange, hold Space, tap link.
Jeepers, I love this thing! Now all I need is about two hundred more pieces of software!

This really should be an easier process.
Also the Pre browser could really use a scrollbar indicator so you can tell where you are on the page as well as a shorcut to jump back to the top of the page ala iPhone.
What about saving pictures from the web browesr? Is there a way or some trick to it?
i am finding there is alot of non-logical KB memorization that needs to be done to use certain features of the Pre because they dont provide a proper GUI alternative.
There is no way to ’save’ pictures off of a website however you can take a screen shot uby holding the orange and pressing ’sym’ and ‘P’… the pictures will come up in your photo app under “screencaprtues”

Yeah, that’s not working with mine either without Orange.
I’m doing it again and again…I wait til a page is fully loaded, hold down the space bar, tap a link and the destination opens in a new card. Maybe my Pre is magical.

VERY odd. I watched the vid Craig, and have no doubt that it works for you. But no matter what I do, it doesn’t work for me. Can you check your webOS version? Mine is 1.0.4, build 129 in the Device Info area.
I could make a YouTube video of it not working if you don’t believe me.
Gotta be a different version of webOS. Mine is also 1.0.4 and I need the orange key.
Sorry…false alarm. The site I was testing it on was set to open links in a new window by default, so the space bar was having no effect whatsoever. Sorry again.
No worries. I was just going to ask if that might be the case. Thanks for taking the trouble to shoot a video though. That’s going the extra mile.

or
Hold Orange or Hold Shift, tap Period or Space then tap link (while still holding Orange or Shift) opens a new card when browsing.
Ppl should just test it on jk’s site to control the variables

Bizarre. Orange+tapdoes NOT work on my Pre but Shift+SYM+tap does and so does Shift, tap space, tap link.
I am using 1.0.4 and I was clicking on links on CNN.

Does anyone know if the Pre can be programed to shut off at a certain time and then turn back on at a pre determined time-I was able to program my BB to shut off at 7 pm and back on at 6 am and my alarm went off at 6:30 am like clockwork – and I could even program it to do m-f and not on weekends
It would be so nice to do that on the Pre save a ton of battery life-now I have to leave on all night so my alarm will go off–
anyone know a hack let me know
