Do You Twitter?

Spaz on the Pre

Spaz on the Pre

I knew that Twitter hit the big time when members of my local news anchor team started using it to do their jobs. They follow local news reporting on Twitter, and they even tweet the current weather. I have used Twitter since the beginning, and it offers some good insight into the happenings around those I follow. There are now good Twitter apps on almost every smartphone platform, so it’s even easier to tweet on the move.

The post I did on disconnectivity anxiety today got me thinking about Twitter. There are those with thousands of followers keeping up with their goings-on, and their “need to tweet” probably is as great as the need to follow for those who are perpetually connected. Twitter can be a good source for breaking news. I first heard about the death of Michael Jackson on Twitter.

My favorite Twitter apps to use are TweetDeck on the PC side, Spaz on the Palm Pre, and Twitterific on the iPhone. The phone apps both do a good job when working with Twitter and when displaying the information in an attractive, easy-to-read format. It’s easy to follow my peeps, and to see who is talking about me. How about you? Do you Twitter, and if so, what apps do you use?

  • I’ve been using Tweed since day 1. Spaz looks interesting; however I got “scared off” early on concerning the stability and haven’t found a reason to change. Spaz’s (Tweed’s doing it too, soon) photo uploading by email kind of irritates me; no file uploading in the API yet! :(

  • Tweetdeck for both the PC and the iPhone. I’m not much of a Tweeter, but I like following a few Tweeps.

  • No. I do not Twitter and I will never Twitter. You might ask yourself “What’s wrong with this guy?” Well, there might be something wrong with Esther but there’s nothing wrong with me. I choose not to Twitter!

  • i don’t use twitter. i have no use for it because i have no work related need to update anyone or any groups about my actions, status, location, or whatever.

i certainly don’t have any personal need to broadcast my every insignificant thought or action to the internets where no one would listen anyway.

i have a twitter account, but just to sit on my screen name.

  • No twittering here… tweeting seems kinda like text messaging for people without friends… :D

  • Tweetie for both Mac and iPhone.

  • Nope. I don’t use Twitter. I tried it for a few days, and decided it wasn’t for me, and deleted my account.

    I guess I just don’t get it.

  • * BrightKite (geotag img uploads and hosting with location aware features)
    * PockeTwit (WinMo client with slick UI)
    * TXT (allows me to send updates to the services I want selectively)
    * web (Twitter.com – Loads super fast in any web browser)

  • Web page on the PC, and I’ll fire up Tweetie before Twitteriffic, Twitterfon, or Tweetdeck on the iPhone. Tweetberry isn’t very good on the BB platform, wish I could try SocialScope. Regarding follow counts, I think most of mine are abandoned accounts.

  • I have no use for Twitter either… everyone I care to follow are on Facebook, and I can post my status there just fine.

    • See, and I just don’t get Facebook at all. I have a page, but never go there.

To be honest, I follow a few friends who I know don’t tweet what they ate for breakfast, but the majority of my tweeps are tech news sites. I think that’s what Twitter will eventually become – less microblogging of daily activities and more of an information source.

  • Tweeting == reverse stalking ;)

  • I use Twitterific for iphone and Tweetdeck for the pc. I think people who don’t twitter have a complete misconception of twitter. It’s not about “I walked my dog.” It’s a worldwide resource for articles, news, meeting interesting people and knowledge. Once you tweet, it’s hard to queet.

    • “worldwide resource for articles, news, meeting interesting people and knowledge”? i already have that. it’s called the “internet”. also, the internet has the capability to contain more information than 140 characters. it’s pretty amazing.

      Ben — 2:00 AM on July 14, 2009 Reply

  • Actually Ben I disagree with you. If you follow someone who you might find interesting, that person would lead you to information (websites, articles, etc) that you might have never knew it existed. Its like word of mouth, some may say.

    • the internet already has that too. it’s called a “blog”. you can even update it via a mobile device. and a blog can be have a message longer than 140 characters, just like this one we’re reading right now.

      Ben — 6:15 PM on July 14, 2009 Reply

  • I use Twitter all the time and follow many mobile web sites that post on Twitter and keep myself up to date that way. My tweets are fed directly to Facebook because the people I follow on both Twit and FB are different and they both get updates that way.

I also use Twitter Local on Air to see what’s going on around my area and have added some new people to follow that are more local.

  • I ran PockeTwit when I used the Fuze and Advantage. Now I use Twitterific on iPhone. I tried TweetDeck on iPhone for a minute, but find Twitterific better for me. Haven’t really done anything with my tablet recently (except for schoolwork)…..

  • I use Twitter for both home and work (restaurant), and primarily I use Gravity, Twitter software for Symbian smartphones, and I’m happy with the product.

  • Glad you dig Spaz, James!

My main phone is actually an iPhone (still don’t have that Pre to test with), so I tend to stick with Tweetie. On the desktop I use Spaz, of course 8)

  • I love PockeTwit for Windows Mobile on my Samsung Omnia.

For PC, TweetDeck is where it’s at of course, especially with the new built-in capability to sync groups across multiple PCs. When is Twitter going to give us built-in groups? Sigh.
