imandroid-screensAll you Palm Pre owners out there who’ve been wishing you could use Skype on your handset can stand down. A web-based app has been released that allows full use of Skype on the handset. The program, IM+, has been around for a good while but this Pre version is brand new.

The app is web-based and all you have to do is visit s4palm.com on your Pre mobile browser. This takes you to a Skype login page, and once you’ve logged in, you can Skype away. This is not a Skype app; it is strictly run in the Pre’s browser. It uses SkypeOut minutes to make calls and supports both text and audio chats to Skype contacts.

The program is free to use for 10 days and a lifetime fee of $9.99 gets you continued usage of IM+.

  • I gave this one a try and it is interesting. I am certainly looking for a way to chat using Skype on the Pre but I would think that at some point we will see an app and not a web based one. I would like to be able to get notifications when someone sends me a message. Having the web page is a start but not much better than having to stare at the screen of my iPhone when using Skype.

  • Giving a third party your skype log in info? Not a bright idea. Also, the advantage for a lot of Pre users (and cell phone users in general) to having a web based app, is that many cell plans offer unlimited browsing. That could mean unlimited skype as long as it’s in browser mode! WiFi or not…

    • IM+ is really widely used, especially on iPod Touch and iPhone… I’ve used it for ages with no problems at all – Just got a Pre and looking forward to using this… although I’m not too impressed having paid £x for the iPod version, and to find out I have to pay another $10 for it to be on my Pre after 10 days isn’t great… I really didn’t think this through =[

  • QUick question. When someone calls you via this version of Skype, that their calls get rerouted to your phone, are you consuming your airtime minutes, or not?

    cheers,

  • Well, just got my answer. The calls via VoIP consume your anytime minutes. So be careful ;-)
