Memeo Send — The FedEx of File Sending?
I got word yesterday of a new file sending service called Memeo Send, so I decided to give it a try. The concept is to offer a simple, secure way to send digital files without the hassle of email or File Transfer Protocol clients.
There’s no limit to the package size and you can send either individual files or entire folders. Memeo Send supports both Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows, so I figured the best test is to use both types of computers.
I set up two accounts with Memeo Send — one with my personal email address and one with my work address.
The software installed without a hitch on my Windows 7 netbook and my MacBook. Creating a “package” is easy either through standard file browsing or by visually dropping a file or folder into a virtual cardboard box.
Memeo Send automatically links to your computer’s address book to make it easier to find contacts, but you can send a package to any email address.

After all files and folders are in the package, you simply hit the Send Securely button — Memeo Send uses 256-bit SSL encryption for all packages. Once the data is on the way, the software provides you a tracking status of your package, just like a standard delivery service would — you can see the upload taking place, a status when your receipient is notified, and when the package is delivered.
On the receiving end, I got both an email and system tray notification that a package was ready for me. I started the download while the upload was happening, as Memeo Send supports simultaneous actions on the same package. I even paused the upload and it had no effect on the download.

All in all, the service works as advertised and once you have the client installed, you can bypass it and just use the Memeo Send website to download packages.
The first three package are free, so anyone can try Memeo Send. After that, you have to purchase credits, which are $0.99 each. It’s not very clear on the Memeo Send site on how big a package can be per credit, or if it is, I couldn’t find it.
So the question becomes: who is this service for? Although it works well, it’s not for me. I’m already paying for a few web-based file storage and synchronization services. As part of those services, I can easily share a folder with anyone and place files in that shared folder at no extra charge. I won’t get a confirmation guarantee that the folks I’m sharing files with actually downloaded the files on their end, but I can live without that.
For a person or business that needs confirmation or wants to send packages of mixed file types, Memeo Send might appeal. It’s easy to use and gets the job done.

This is a bit off topic but have you looked into using your Windows Home Server to replace/supplement the web-based file storage services you’re paying for Kevin?
Although I haven’t ever used mine for sharing files with others I do constantly upload files to it from client sites and it saves me having to lug a USB keychain around with me. That’s especially useful because some of my clients (like the site I’m currently working at) block USB ports. Whenever I need access to a file I can just log onto my Home Server and download it.
Good question, Jake. Ultimately, my WHS effort is more of an experiment to see what I can do with it and what functions it can offer me. Without question, I’ll be looking at remote storage features to see how it compares to the services I’m using today. The eventual goal is to see how much a WHS solution can be part of the “personal cloud” solution I’ve envisioned for the past year or so. WHS alone isn’t likely the answer, but when combined with other services, add-ins and software, I think it has a ton of potential.
For one off and fast file transfers, I have been extremely satisfied with http://www.jetbytes.com/ for the last few months. Its perhaps not quite as fast, as you need to zip the files together (because you can only send one at a time), but its free and easy.
Thanks for the comments about Memeo Send. I wanted to add one final clarification. You asked, who is this service for? The answer is that this service is aimed at small and medium business, as well as designers, who just don’t know how to send large files. It’s also aimed at those who aren’t satisfied with their current provider. We think this is a very simple solution that many companies will love and share with others.
