Samsung Moment™ PhoneSo is everyone scrambling to get more Android devices simply because analysts expect it to be the number two smartphone platform by 2012? Whatever the reason, it’s good to see more choices and there’s another one with Google for Sprint customers. The Samsung Moment is poised for a November 1 launch date with a $179.99 price tag after rebates and two-year contract.

This li’l fella sports a 320×480, 3.2-inch AMOLED touchscreen display like its close cousin — T-Mobile’s Behold II, also from Samsung. But it gains a slide-out QWERTY keyboard for those that need tactile, hardware buttons. Inside, Sprint says there’s an 800MHz CPU, making it “one of the fastest wireless phones available today.” Also included is a 3.2-megapixel camera, stereo Bluetooth support, 3.5mm headphone jack, visual voicemail and support for a whopping 32GB of external memory. Of course, there’s EVDO Rev A. tucked in as well an 802.11b/g radio. And all of the Sprint extras are there too: NFL Mobile Live, NASCAR Sprint Cup Live and Sprint Navigation. Did you notice the optical touchpad on the bottom? I think I’d like that over a trackball or D-pad.

  • based on hype/hardware/preview/review what is the best Android phone out there/planned to soon be there?

  • Sprint just had to pull this out of the bag, right before the Hero Launch. I dont know what to do now, any suggestions?

I have an original Iphone 3G and I’m ready to order the HERO from Sprint, but this came up. I’m second guessing myself now.

The one feature that makes me think about getting the Moment is the processor. I worry about the HERO’s processor and the Moments is faster. Of course, the Moment has stock android, Hero has Sense skin.

I’m used to virual keyboards now so a physical keyboard is a wash for me.

    Any help would be great.

    • The battery, wifi and location based services are all having major issues. I’d wait until it can update to Android 1.6, keep reading user reviews as they come along.

  • Go with the Hero, the Samsung Moment is a basic Google phone. No multi-touch, no Exchange support, no Sense UI, no integrated messaging, etc. 1.6 will not be available for the Samsung Moment until 2010.

  • @ Informed

I agree, but why do you think it will take until 2010 for the Moment to get 1.6? Since its standard Google they could release it with 1.6 or do an OTA update like T-mobile did….last week.

I expect 1.6 to come for the Hero in a month or two.

    • According to a Samsung rep, only certain devices are getting the update this year. The Moment is not one of them. The Hero will get 1.6 at launch or a day or two later.

    • PhoneScoop had a hands on vid and says it will ship with 1.6. Since there’s little to no customization, I don’t know of any reason it wouldn’t see 1.6 at launch.

    • I spoke with our Samsung rep, again, she confirmed the Moment will not get 1.6 until 2010. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iZrgY3577yE At the 6:25 mark he also says 1.6 will be available 2010.

    • Yup, different folks are clearly reporting different things. Again, I can’t see why 1.6 wouldn’t be on the device since there’s no Samsung TouchWiz or other major mods. FWIW: I’ll reach out direct to my contact in Sprint’s PR department and share the info. At this rate, it will be different from the other two reports. ;)

    • It’s better to be on the safe side and not rush 1.6, as to Touchwiz, initially it was supposed to be on the Moment, it slowed the device down, Sprint decided to not have Touchwiz on the Moment.

  • Besides, can’t you just go for the Hero and then trade for the Moment since it’s within the 30 day trial period?
