What Mobile Tech Will You Buy This Year?
The first day of a new year in a new decade; what better time for geeks to be thinking of cool gadgets to come? We’ve looked at the gadgets we bought last year, let’s look at what geeky purchases are likely to come this year. Are you in the market for a cool mobile tech purchase? What do you anticipate buying this year? If you are thinking of buying a rumored product, go ahead and mention it. We don’t have to worry about what will actually appear, let’s concentrate on what we will likely purchase in 2010.

Right now my plan is to purchase the asus 1005PE next week then purchase a tablet once a few come out with reviews.
It’s time to outfit a new traveling kit… – New mobile phone (either a Nexus One or an iPhone) – Portable computer (I don’t create much while on the road so a netbook will be fine) – Media device ( a new tablet to function as an eReader and media pad) – New bag ( I like the Boog bags)
Any thoughts?
Alright, I’ll admit it, I plan on buying the Apple Tablet. And another latest, greatest iPhone of course.
You plan on buying an Apple tablet despite not knowing what it will actually be or what it will do?
I like that. Apple is amazing at marketing, even when they may not have a product or not.
People are going to buy an Apple tablet that isn’t even real yet and they don’t know what it will even do. You sir, @66Sweep, are a company’s dream customer.
I know that it must be difficult to figure out that it will likely be a larger iPhone or an iPod Touch. As such it will likely run apps. It will play movies! Wow.
I plan on buying one as well, and frankly rare is the day that Apple does not deliver. Hey, I’m even developing for it even though it doesn’t exist!
I’ll buy one too – at the very least it’ll be quality hardware and do the limited things it does well.
Hopefully though they don’t make me get another 3g plan – I already have 4 – an iphone dock or being able to swap the sim card would be nice.
Or even better a mifi dock
And all the poor, little sheep say what? I was talking to a co-worker today (not tech-savvy at all) who had just purchased the latest generation Nano. I said she should’ve bought the Sansa fuse. You can get one for only 60 bucks and the memory is expandable. She said if she wanted that feature, she would just use her phone for music. I asked her why she didn’t just do that instead of buying an iPod. She replied, “Because… it’s an iPod!” You buy Apple for the same reason you buy a Lexus – not because it’s the greatest product of it’s kind in the market, but because it’s Apple. It’s a status thing almost.
A rare day when Apple does not deliver? Can we say MacBook Air? Most completely useless piece of overpriced sheep dung ever. Ooooo… it fits in an envelope. That’s great, but I don’t usually carry around a Manilla envolope for my gear.
I, for one, won’t buy a slate device just because it’s made by Apple. I will give serious consideration to one, and will hold back on committing my money until after Apple’s January product announcement, for three reasons:
I like Apple’s design sense. That’s a personal choice. You might not. I really don’t care one way or the other.
Apple has the juice to bring a lot of content providers to the table at entry if they introduce a device, and the rumors suggest that they’ve been busy lining those folks up. That could greatly expand the ecosystem of easily-accessible content from an Apple device compared to an Android slate. (I can’t envision Marvel or DC inking deals with Entourage to deliver comics to the eDGe, for example.)
Since I already have an iPod, and therefore a large collection of music organized through iTunes, an Apple tablet would have a somewhat lower barrier-to-entry in terms of using my existing media – I could just sync it to my desktop. An Android tablet will require some additional work to sync, and possibly shelling out to get non-DRM versions of tracks I bought from the iTunes Store before early 2009.
So essentially you want to buy one because you think it will be pretty and it will play all the music that you already have on your iPod.
Chalking it up to “it’s a status thing” shows a lack of understanding of the populace. Sure, for many, it is a “status” symbol. But there’s more to brand loyalties than just status.
There’s the fact that it’s a “known quantity”. There’s the fact that market momentum brings a large market of accessories, as well as a larger pool of resources (support resources, etc.).
It’s just like all of the people who buy Windows machines. They’re not ALL idiots. Some of them are just taking the safe bet, instead of the good bet.
Or people who use Linux exactly because it ISN’T Windows (not because of the merits of the individual platforms). Just as stupid.
It’s not just the people who buy Apple products solely because they have an Apple on them.
In just about every market category, there’s a safe choice (or a few safe choices). And the safe choice varies according to what you’re looking for. People like that safety. They like it more than they like status symbols. The Sansa isn’t a safe choice. It might be a good choice. It may even (for some measures) be the best choice. That doesn’t make it the safe choice.
@Jake: did you even read my comment? Look at the part where it says “will give serious consideration to” again, please.
And then go learn all the other crap required by the Windows trick bag – and the lack of compatibility with so many other easy to use devices.
But, then, being smarter than all the people making money from iTunes through iPod to OS X – you already own all the other crap you have to kludge together to get half the ease of use.
Contempt breeds feelings of superiority – but, not good software.
I have pretty much the necessities down; phone and laptop. But, I really need an ereader or tablet or something that integrates both ideas. That would be ideal.
I like the Entourage eDGe, but it is too fugly for my taste. Hopefully that new Asus dual screen reader/netbook will be lighter and sexier.
CES is coming so we will see!
A tablet. Current front-runners are the Entourage eDGe and the ICD Ultra, with dark-horse slots reserved for cool CES announcements and the Apple iUnicorn, or whatever they’re calling it.
What I’m really hoping for is a smartbook capable of having Open Office installed, and capable of running on batteries for significantly longer than the current longest-lasting netbooks.
I hope a android/arm based tablet with 7 or 9 inch screen and slider keybord. Maybe a new laptop.
Mid-year, will probably get an iPhone, Other than that I am set already with 2 laptops, a desktop, a tablet pc an an ipod touch. ut who am I kidding, I will consider a new tablet if Apple comes out with one that really allows me to use it for work and not just entertainment (same would apply to a Microsoft Courier).
The one purchase I am already looking to make in 2010 is a dedicated e-book reader. As part of my job I regularly need to refer to a lot of PDF docs and rather than wait while I fire up my tablet I want a device that can handle PDF files formatted for US Letter size. Until late in 2009 my thought had been to go with a Kindle DX but its lack of stylus support for highlighting text and jotting down notes meant it didn’t really fit my requirements. Now I’m waiting to see what Plastic Logic has to offer when it debuts its touch sensitive Que reader at CES.
The NEXUS ONE… looking very promising. I would also like to get a tablet, but running thin on gadgets budget…
I’m considering the plastic logic que, but I am waiting for barnes and noble to have them on display before I get one. I need something to read pdf’s and office documents
I’m also looking to replace my long in the tooth Motion M1400. The front runners are the HP 2730p and the Lenovo x200.
My iphone contract will be up at the end of the year, so I’ll be getting another iPhone if Apple introduces one with more storage. I want at least 64gig.
If apple introduces a tablet that has inking, I’m getting it. If its just a media consumption device, I’m not sure.
I’ll be looking to see what the smartbooks turn out to be.
Rumour has it that HP will be announcing an upgrade to the 2730p (2740p I believe) at CES.
hey i have had the 2710p then went to the 2730p but i dont think that i would get a new hp tablet. They just dont have any new stuff in them and they say that u will get over 12hrs well this is the case if u wont to make the screen so that u cant c it unless u are under a light then u have to have the performance that bad when u have 3 tabs open in firefox and a word doc it will struggle then if u use the in built 3g its even worse so if u wont to use it as a mobile computer u wont get any more then 8hrs in the real world and thats with the extra battery. Go for the ibm….. and the hp will struggle to play HD youtube.
Definitely the Apple tablet computer (iSlate -or- MacTablet). Got $1000 set aside for immediate purchase. Hope I’m not disappointed but I have a lot of faith in the geniuses from Cupertino. Hopefully it is a game changer like the iPhone was, i mean look how many YEARS the other cell phone engineers have had to catch up and they still haven’t reached the plateau set by the Jesus Phone. Just shows how many very BAD handset engineers in the workplace these days…such a shame…how they keep their jobs is beyond comprehension.
My hope for some years has been an Apple tablet. The Tablet PC never quite delivered what I needed and I prefer OS X. It should be possible to fit an Air level processor in a ten inch tablet that docks to a monitor and uses the tablet as a mouse surface. A Happy Hacking keyboard!
I’m hoping for a decent tablet (7-9 inches) running android or something from apple if it exists. Has to be finger friendly. I just got a new tablet a few days ago and I got my iPhone last year so unless the new one is crazy awesome then I won’t be upgrading that. I would like a new laptop bag as the X200T doesn’t fit in anything I have. And a mophie air for my iPhone would be nice.
0) Gadget Bag (the Maxpedition Mongo)
1) Tablet Computer (front runners: Notion Ink’s tablet, EnTourage eDGe … and depending on whether/what/when Apple comes up with, maybe Apple … MAYBE a ChromeOS tablet, if it has Dalvik, and the price is right)
2) If someone comes up with a decent successor to the G1, maybe a new phone. If not, maybe an N900 (but maybe not … more likely to do it, if T-Mobile starts carrying it directly).
3) If the economy rebounds, maybe a Mifi.
I expect to buy a new mobile phone this year. I’ve been using my venerable Sprint Touch (aka HTC Vogue) for nearly three years now and it’s showing its age. I’ve been running cooked ROMs on it for some time now (thanks, xda-developers!), but the screen is scratched up pretty bad and the CPU isn’t getting any faster…
The problem is, I love the small thin form factor and haven’t seen anything else from Sprint lately that can compete. The Touch Pro 2 is too large, WAY too expensive, and still using a resistive touch screen. I’d jump on the HD2 if they had it, but it looks like only T-Mobile will get it in the U.S.
Unless I hear that some killer new capacitive touch screen WM phone is coming soon on Sprint, I may just break down and buy a Palm Pre. My wife is using one and she loves it. It does seem like a pretty decent phone. I’m just hesitant to give up on Windows Mobile, something I’ve been running on my PDAs/phones since it was just Windows CE (on my old Jornada 320).
Perry, give up on Windows and go out today to purchase either the Palm Pre or HTC Hero. It will take a few days of mental adjustment, but you have no idea what you’re missing. I was happily using the Touch until the Palm Pre came out. The Pre has been great, and still my daily phone, but I have been playing with the Hero for a couple of weeks now. At this point, if I was buying a new phone, I would go with Android over the Pre.
A 9″ tablet is on my list.
I only need a new phone. Current is BB 8330 World Edition with 8 GB Microcard. I carry my whole Real Estate Business in it and it is, as previous BBs I had, the ruggedest, most reliable phone. I tried a Palm Centro for a few weeks but it is so flimsy that broke down twice so I went back to my BB. I LOVE Sprint (Los Angeles area) with Everything Plan for $99 ($119 after all the fees) since I have unlimited everything, flawless web interface to set up phone and email accounts including personalized signatures and Premium Level 2 Tech Support if you ever need to call (call answered in 30 seconds with someone that knows all tricks of your phone) plus in store Genius Desk if you ever need more. I would love a larger screen, but will not move my account to ATT or Verizon since I have had horrible experiences with both of them (I actually paid $250 ETF to exit Verizon 2 years ago due to the lack of support and coverage, YES BAD 3G COVERAGE IN LOS ANGELES and it was hurting my business). This is what I wish for a phone: all the features of an iPhone or Droid, ruggedness, Sprint Everything Plan for $99. WIll wait to see if Sprint comes up with any decent phone with this features.
NEXUS ONE
A good camera to create HD YouTube videos. If my budgets allows I will go for a DSLR with HD video recording capabilities such as the Canon EOS 500D/Rebel T1i. If this proves to be to expensive I will probably buy a Kodak Zi8 (because of the audio-in port for an external microphone).
I’ll probably stick with my Palm Pre through this year because it really is perfect for my needs. Android phones are tempting, but wouldn’t give me anything new. I will need a new notebook soon, probably a 15″ MacBook Pro.
The excitement for me is the netbook/tablet arena. I think this is where the real action will be this year and I can’t wait. I have been a happy owner of the Nokia N800/810 tablets for a long time, but they are underpowered and too small. Something like the enTourage eDGe looks interesting, but I want to see what else comes out of CES. I wrote about this topic on my blog if anyone is interested:
http://rstoeber.com/blog/2009/12/31/2010-is-the-year-of-the-net-smart-book-tablet/
(Sorry if this is an inappropriate link – feel free to delete.)
I’m getting an iphone 3gs tomorrow. Plan to get a tablet- looking forward to the Acer tablets that should be in the US soon. I’m sure I’ll pick up a smartbook sometime this year as well.
Debating between a mbp 13″ and a 15″. Biggest question: Is mobility enough of a priority to drop decent gaming capabilities?
Well, since I still have that $200 I’d tucked away for a Crunchpad, I’m sure I’ll get something…
– Will likely replace my Verizon Touch Pro next fall when my contract’s up. I’ve never been fully satisfied with it, but I’m not too psyched about other models right now.
– Maybe a slate/tablet. I have an HP tx2000 and I seldom use tablet mode anymore, so if I get a slate, it’ll have to be pretty compelling.
– Possibly a new ADF scanner. My circa 2003 HP Scanjet 5550c is getting a little long in the tooth (but still holding up OK).
I’m looking at 3 major purchases this year:
-Core i9 workstation -Pinetrail netbook with Win 7 -Toshiba Dynapocket with Windows Mobile 7
I could certainly elaborate further on why I went behind my choices, but you’ll need to jump over to my blog next week to read that!
The only thing I want this year is the new Google Chrome OS Netbook. I’ve recently abandoned Windows in favor of a 15inch Mac Book and see no point in going back to Windows on a Netbook.
I’ll be setting aside a budget of around $1,000.
-Netbook (PINETRAIL) with HD capabilities -Once my contract with AT&T is due, I’ll probably get an iPhone with another company. AHEM Terrible service/coverage Ahem -Insert Cool Gadget Here (I’ll be checking JKondarun! a lot for this one).
I’m getting a Nokia 5800 Nav Edition and Garmin Nuviphone G60 and trying to learn all about GPS a few years later than everyone else. I like that I’ll be able to use both of with a prepaid sim basically GPS with a celluar phone attached.
Unless something truly ground breaking comes out this year and if my gadgets last as long as I am expecting them to, I plan on taking things easier this year. I bought my Gateway laptop this summer; I dont expect to replace that this year, and I’m not that big of an audiophile so my sony in ear headphones and ibiza rhapsody should do fine. I bought myself an external monitor as a holiday treat, and my mouse is epic…
So yeah unless one of my gadgets gives in I should be just about covered.
I take all that back. A phone, I plan on buying a better cell phone this year. Right now I’m eyeing the blackberry curve with the optical trackpad.
I have my eye on the Nexus One, but I am not 100% sure yet. Will be replacing my Storm with an Android Device.
My eee 1005 is in great shape, but I will look very close at Chrome OS based devices.
I am dropping the tethering on my Storm in favor of a MiFi.
Lie everyone I will be keeping my eye on the tablet/slate devices. However, I won’t be too concerned with what Apple does.
Planning on getting the Lenovo X200t w/ multitouch, and either the N900 or a new WinMo phone for 2010.
-new tablet- upgrading from hp 2730p -new iphone- they need a 64gb one, 32 just isnt big. -new bose sound system,301 frnt ,201 back, 161 side, and vcs10 cen- -new sony vaio x-
TRS-80 !!!
I’ll be hard pressed to lay off a big screen Android phone with a Snapdragon processor on Verizon… and after running the Swype beta on my MotoDroid, I really don’t think I need a physical keypad anymore — even with my geezer paws…
I’m looking for a good pocketable computer, something lie like PSP Slim (5.5 inch) but runs W7 with 128Gb SSD, 3G, GPS and weights max 300g.
Br, Hessu
Pandora (now that it will be shipped by the end of Jan) OQO now that is affordable on ebay…..unless a nice snapdragon smartbook design is released at CES
Speaking of CES – I think there will be a whole new host of answers after the show. Going to need to take a wek off of work just to keep up with all of the press releases!
I don’t expect CES to give us a whole new list of gadgets to plan on buying this year. New gadgets to drool over, yes. But, few (if any) of the drool-worthy ones will come out this year. In my opinion/observation/experience, CES 2010 will be the source of gadgets to plan on buying in 2011. :-}
I’m not expecting to buy, but if a good deal comes along and/or something dies…
1) Verizon Mi-Fi: Still not convinced I want to deal with a device that I have to worry about power and battery life, but there’s a lot about it to lust after.
2) Dedicated e-reader. Like others, I’m holding out for a color e-ink device, preferably with native PDF and .doc support. I think that e-book readers are on the cusp of breaking wide open, with the next two years seeing vast leaps in their technology. Of course, whatever we buy will be obsolete in a week.
3) May upgrade my iPhone 3g to 3gs. May not.
Since I bought my Samsung N120 netbook a few months ago, I couldn’t be happier with it. Really. Couldn’t. PineTrail doesn’t tempt me. My aging Fujitsu T4020 tablet is sitting unused and I’m not actively looking to replace it. Amazing.
I’m pretty content with what I have currently.
The only device I’m looking for is a tablet PC. I’m hoping the Apple Tablet will run OS X and decent hardware specs.
If not, I’ll be looking for a Windows one which does the following very well:
In order from most important to least:
The primary purpose would be to consume media content, especially ebooks. I’m leerly about the Amazon Kindle simply because I’ve read that the PDF support is flakey. I know about Savory but there’s no version available for the International Kindle. And as being a Canadian, I think that a lot of the value in the ebooks pricing will go away as the USD corrects itself.
I’ve noticed other commentors have similiar needs to mine and shared some tablets they’re considering. Hopefully, one of them will meet my needs should the Apple tablet fail to deliver.
I’ll buy anything if it’s shiny and made by Apple
I’m planning to get
MiFi
Nikon D300s to upgrade from D60
Any new gadget may interest me that I might need.
Most likely Nexus One & looks like this tablet from Notion, could be it for this year? otherwise the only rumored ‘gadget’ looking to this year would be Samsung’s 14″ AMOLED notebook…
I’d like a 7-10″ slate that is a primarily a good e-reader and media player in a lightweight form factor, but which can also competently do web browsing, cloud computing and office applications without a long boot up to get going. It needs to travel well, with good battery life, and be fast and easy to use. I’ll add a portable keyboard and mouse of some sort, and it will save me the trouble of booting up my laptop just to check web sites. (I now often resort to my Blackberry for just that reason, but it’s not the best web experience.) Am likely to jump on one as soon as I find a product I find that’s priced right, has the needed apps and “feels good” to me. But I’m also very picky about my electronics and fickle wrt my devices tastes, so we’ll see what happens.
look for a Kindle this year, hope the price will drop !
After Last year where I was unemployed for 7 months. I am hoping to have the money (after catching up my debts) to upgrade my Core Solo Mac Mini to the Newest Mac Mini. I Hope to replace my 16 GB iPhone 3G with a 32 GB iPhone 3GS (or the newest model this summer). I would Love to get a 17in Mac Book Pro ( I used one for two years at my last job, Lost the laptop when I was forced to leave.) I like to get my hands on a Dell Mini 10v (even if its gently used), to replace my Acre Aspire One AAO150.
I’m pretty well set up, having used 2009 to replace a lot of old tech. A new HP Pavilion desktop for heavy work, an Acer 1410 for portable production (Windows 7 and a Bamboo tablet make this a very useful tool) and a Viliv S5 knock-around portable consumption. Topped off with a Verizon MiFi I’m pretty well set for the year.
If I do buy any tech at all this year it will most likely be a replacement for the Sprint Touch.
One Word.
iSlate
’nuff said.
An iPhone to replace my BlacBerry Bold and iPod Touch if 64gb or larger is out, new 15.x” Lenovo ThinkPad W510 mobile workstation w/ advanced dock. Possibly a Dell 30″ Ultrasharp LCD to replace my 24″ Ultrasharp.
I simply do not have the cash to blow on the Apple tablet. Given the network issues that the iphone has experienced it would be insane to get one as soon as it is released. Also, it hasn’t even been announced. I already have a mac mini, a dell laptop, a desktop machine with 1 windows and 3 linux partitions so naturally I will probably get the Apple tablet and pre-order it from Apple’s site a week before it comes out.
i am planing to buy BlackBerryBlackberry 9500 Thunder
